Apple harvest time marks the change of seasons here in Greater Lowell. Apples used to be a major agricultural product locally. A history of Westford from 1883 says "Large orchards abound on Frances Hill and Tadmuck Hill, and the annual product of apples is very large. In some years thousands of barrels of apples are shipped to England." While local orchards still supply grocery stores, we think of apple orchards mostly now for weekend apple-picking visits, cider doughnuts, apple crisp, and hay rides.
Here are some wonderful recipes, crafts and activities that we've published over the years on Lowell Macaroni Kid, Macaroni Kid EATS, and other regional editions. Gather the kids and celebrate the Apple!
