The Lantern Light Camp approach: We believe the purpose of camp is for campers to build confidence, self-reliance, and an ability to connect to the community. This comes both within living in a new community and through the skills they learn in the program. At Lantern Light Camps we meet campers where they are emotionally and physically and help them rise to the next level through goal setting, skill development, and perseverance, supported by the coaching and mentoring of our dedicated staff. Ultimately, campers get to see themselves in a new light, to appreciate and understand what they have to contribute to making the world a better place.
Social/Emotional Skills & Personal Growth:
- Relationship Building: Group activities, communal living, intentional free time, and special moments provide many opportunities for campers to build relationships with peers and staff, even across differences. Campers will be supported in understanding and overcoming personal and relationship challenges, and working through conflict, as necessary.
- Goal Setting and Risk Taking: Staff help foster curiosity and discovery by helping campers articulate goals at the start of camp and check in regularly to encourage their progress.
- Personal Care: Semi-independent from caregivers pushes campers to take more responsibility for their personal hygiene and self care with reminders and support from our staff.
- Community Engagement and Responsibility: Campers will participate in “community improvement activities” and all-camp activities to learn to be thoughtful stewards of our campus and community.
- Self Confidence and Self Reliance: Focus on self-confidence and self-reliance is woven through each activity, peer or staff relationship, and the structure of our programs. Campers are able to see themselves in a new light, explore their capabilities, and celebrate their accomplishments.
Activity Skills
- Watersports: Campers will gain water safety awareness while improving proficiency in swimming, sailing and canoeing.
- Nature Study: Campers will identify trees, plants, and local animal and aquatic life. They will explore our natural environment, recognize stars and constellations, and build habitats for pollinators or small animals.
- Wilderness skills: Campers will learn skills such as fire building, outdoor cooking, shelter building, navigation with a map and compass.
- Artistic Expression: Campers will create art in different mediums such as drawing, painting, or pottery; or through creative expression such as dance, drama, and music.
- Exercise & Games: Campers will develop skills by engaging in team sports, group games, and activities such as archery and climbing.
