If you’re looking for something new, adventurous, and fun to do with your kids, Metro Rock in Tyngsboro is an awesome experience. My kids have been wanting to try indoor rock climbing, so we gave it a shot, and they had a blast!
Metro Rock opened in January, and I found their mission to be a great one: “to share the spirit of climbing.” They prioritize inclusion, which was evident during our visit—people of all ages and abilities were climbing during our visit. The gym also offers financial assistance to those who need it so that everyone can enjoy rock climbing, regardless of their financial situation. It truly shows their commitment to the spirit of the sport.
When we arrived, the friendly staff quickly showed us the ropes—literally and figuratively. My kids were excited but a little nervous, and the staff put us right at ease. They helped us get our shoes and harnesses fitted, then walked us through the entire gym, explaining what everything was and how to use it. They made themselves available for questions and checked in on us a few times throughout our visit. When my kids had trouble maneuvering a certain spot, the staff was quick to give tips and demonstrate techniques. I found this to be incredibly helpful and thoughtful. At many places, once you check in, you’re kind of on your own, but the staff here really took the time and effort to ensure we enjoyed our experience.
I expected it to be packed, but there were only a handful of other people there, which made for a much more laid-back experience where the kids could focus on learning and practicing. We were glad it wasn’t a chaotic or loud environment. On the day we went, they were preparing for a competition the following day, so some of the rock walls were unavailable, but that was okay. Since it was our first time, it was better for the kids to focus on a few walls so they could get the hang of it.
There is a “Walltopia” area for ages fourteen and up where you can download an app to try different climbing routes.
The facility has a chalk dispenser for hands if needed, plus a small concession area up front with snacks and drinks. If you want to take a break from climbing, there’s a foosball table to play and plenty of spots to sit. The facility was super clean, and art contest submissions are displayed on the walls, which were really cool to see.
They offer some fun ways to switch things up, too. On Friday nights at 8:30 PM, they shut the lights off, and everyone climbs with headlamps—which was a little too difficult for us first-timers, but a very cool challenge! They also hold competitions, host birthday parties, and offer a summer camp.
We weren’t even out of the parking lot before my kids were asking to go back; they had such a fun experience! If you are looking for a full day out, the facility is conveniently located right next door to Player One, a family-friendly entertainment center with an arcade, bowling, axe throwing, and more. It’s also super close to the Pheasant Lane Mall and countless restaurant options.
