My kids and I recently visited the Lampson Playground at the Peggy Hannon-Rizza Recreation Complex. It’s a well-loved spot in Billerica that also has multiple sports fields and courts, plus a brand new skatepark. It is usually pretty busy here, especially during sporting events, but we arrived a little before noon on a weekday during April break and had the place to ourselves.
The playground itself is fully fenced-in and is made up of two main structures. The smaller one is geared towards ages 2-5 and has stepping stones, a balance beam, a tunnel, and slides. One side of the structure has a “Learning Braille” board, which adds a layer of educational play that I love to see. Beneath that, there is a table for kids to play pretend restaurant or drive-through. My son loved the ladybug and grasshopper ride-ons.
The larger structure is geared toward older, more coordinated kiddos and has a lot to climb. My kids especially loved the curved ladder and the giant pyramid rope climber. There are also monkey bars, slides, and a rock wall. The only thing the park lacks is swings, but it didn’t matter to my kids because there’s so much else to do.
Just outside of the fenced-in playground, there is an area with benches. A picnic pavilion also offers a place to sit out of the sun, but the park itself doesn’t offer much shade. It’s very well-maintained; I didn’t spot a single piece of litter.
The complex is also home to a ton of athletic facilities, including basketball, tennis, and pickleball courts. For field sports, there are synthetic turf fields for football and lacrosse, plus fields for baseball and softball. Near the snack shack, there’s a game plaza that has bocce, ping pong, and cornhole. The snack shack, called the “Bubba Shack,” is only open during events, but the bathrooms are seasonally open during park hours.
After our playground session, we headed over to the skatepark. The recent update was much needed and is appreciated by so many kids. My son loves to skate and ride bikes, so we spent a good chunk of time here between the playground and the skatepark. It was definitely the highlight for him.
The recreation complex was named for Peggy Hannon-Rizza, who devoted several years to the Billerica Recreation Department and did so much for the community, including creating and improving programs and playgrounds. There’s really something for everyone here, and it’s a huge benefit to many local kids. It’s a stop worth making if you’re in the area, and a drive worth making if you’re not!
