If you’re looking for an interactive and inclusive playground, the newly renovated Durkin Park in Lowell is a really great choice. My kids and I recently checked it out and ended up going two days in a row because they liked it so much. It’s located right next to the Lincoln School and is used by students during the day, but it is a public park open to everyone outside of school hours.
It is fully fenced in, and the pour-in-place rubber flooring is a smart upgrade. I’m happy to see more parks choosing this over mulch.
There are climbing structures for both younger and older kids. The structure for older kids includes multiple slides, a climbing tube, a mini rock wall, observation platforms, and benches underneath.
The structure for younger children is lower with more gentle slides.
My kids stayed busy the entire visit. My son’s favorite part was the sloped rock wall, and my daughter loved lounging on the big circle swing.
There are a lot of fun learning elements on the equipment that keep kids engaged too, like a built-in tic-tac-toe game, musical chimes, a bead maze, and a steering wheel.
Creative features on the equipment like cartoon animals and a 3D elephant and monkey climber make it extra kid-friendly.
I found the playground communication board to be a thoughtful touch, and I noticed a few kids using it on our way in.
Aside from the playground, there’s a basketball court and a T-ball field.
I was impressed with the park’s overall cleanliness. There aren’t any shaded spots or bathrooms unfortunately, but parking is close and easy and there are plenty of places to sit.
It’s a great spot for an after school play session or a weekend outing. My kids are already asking to go back again!
