My family and I stumbled upon the Ben Hall-Masterson Memorial Playground while attending a soccer game at Gage Field in the Centralville area of Lowell, near the Dracut line. This small playground is near the McAuliffe Elementary School and conveniently has its own parking lot with 2 porta-potties right next to it. The fully fenced-in playground is situated on mulch, with ample grass space outside of the fence for running, throwing a ball, etc. Multiple picnic tables, benches, and trash cans (both in and out of the fenced in area) make it convenient for snack breaks. We were there on a weekday evening, while multiple games were being played on the nearby fields, and it didn’t disturb our playground experience one bit! Many trees surround the playground, however, the sun was already setting at the time of our visit, so I’d have to visit during full sun hours to really know how much shade the trees provide.
My kids, ages 5 and 8, played for half an hour but wanted to stay longer! They, along with a few other kids at the park, took turns going down this steep yellow slide. The other kids at the park were younger than mine and were having a blast going down this slide also.
Behind this play structure are the swings, my 8-year-old daughter's favorite activity! With 5 regular swings, 1 handicap accessible swing, a baby swing (that was out of order at the time of our visit), and a tandem swing for parent/child, there’s something for everyone. While there we witnessed a mom and her toddler using the tandem swing, and they both seemed to enjoy it!
This structure was my kid’s favorite-with so many climbing and hanging options. You can get through the entire “obstacle course” without touching the ground IF you’re up for the challenge. Both of my kids did need help reaching the monkey bars, so it may be suited for older/taller kids.
We enjoyed this play structure, since it’s something different we haven’t seen at other parks. Again, my kids needed help getting up into the seat, but once there had fun spinning themselves around using the bars for assistance. Unlike the spinning chairs that automatically spin when you sit on them, this required some upper body strength!
To my surprise, this structure contained a metal slide. I don’t know how hot it gets, as we were there on a fall evening, but proceed with caution if going during a hot sunny day. My kids weren’t into this area, but I did see younger kids playing on it. I would say it’s appropriate for kids under 5, or any age kiddo who prefers to be a bit closer to the ground. The best part of this structure was the telescope underneath the blue landing. I saw some kids using it and decided to climb under there to see for myself. (Just doing some “quality control” for the kids). I’m happy to report that you can see through it and move it around to explore the park and surroundings!
Overall, my family and I enjoyed discovering Ben Hall-Masterson Memorial Playground on a spontaneous mid-week evening adventure! With plenty of swings, opportunities for climbing and sliding, and some unique features, I’d recommend stopping by when you’re in the area. It’s a more intimate setting where you don’t have large areas to run back and forth in order watch your kids. You can pretty much see them from any part of the fenced in playground. I would certainly return to this park with my 5-year-old boy and 8-year-old girl.
