Father Kirwin Playground in South Lowell is the ideal playground for little ones who enjoy a more relaxed park trip without crowds and chaos. It’s on the smaller side and it’s quiet, plus there’s plenty of green space and a paved walking path as well.
The playground holds basic yet entertaining structures such as a spider web dome, a tunnel, a spinning seat (my son’s favorite), a balance beam, and a slide.
There is also a cute little bench and window area where kids can play pretend restaurant or drive-thru.
A large sign teaching Spanish words is posted on the fence.
With benches, a picnic table, and a large grassy area, there are several spots to enjoy a break or a snack, and there is some shade beneath the trees.
The park is fenced in, but not completely. There is no parking lot, however, there is on-street parking. Opposite the playground is a basketball court.
While you’re in the area, I highly suggest pairing this playground trip with a walk along the Concord River Greenway. From the park, you can walk across the street and cut through the parking lot at Waterhead apartment complex to get to the path. However, if you’d like to start at the beginning of the path (which is the best spot because it has the Wamesit Falls Overlook) all you have to do is make a quick trip around the corner. There’s a small parking lot at 814 Lawrence Street, and you can begin your walk from there, where there is a beautiful waterfall. It’s a serene escape in a busy environment, and it’s especially enjoyable this time of year when the leaves are changing.
Park trips and nature walks are some of my family’s favorite things to do on the weekend. I encourage you to get outside, enjoy the beautiful fall weather, and explore a new local playground or walking path this weekend!
