Kitteredge Park is by far my family’s favorite park in Lowell. With an updated playground, plenty of grassy space to play, and a walking path throughout the park, it is such a nice way to spend an afternoon, especially in the fall.
Renovations at the park last year included many improvements such as poured in rubber to replace the mulch and brand new treehouse themed play equipment.
I really love this theme which included mushroom steppers, a wood balance beam, pretend rocks to climb, monkey bars, and slides. There are also several swings, including a handicap accessible one.
There is a walking path throughout the park, and plenty of green space that is the perfect picnic spot after playing. Part of the park is fenced in, and the other part has a low stone wall. It feels safe for kids of all ages, and it is really clean as well. While the park is located along a main road, there is a side street for easy parking. Picnic tables and benches are located throughout.
Kitteredge Park is what is known as a passive park, meaning that it is meant as a space to enjoy a natural setting and does not have any sports fields or hold any recreational activities. It is meant to be a place for everyone to enjoy a little peace and a little fun amid a bustling city. The park, originally a part of Tewksbury that was later annexed to Lowell, has been around since the 1800’s. As part of the property owners’ sale stipulations to the town, it was to always remain an open common space for local residents to enjoy. Originally called Washington Square, it was eventually named after Paul Kitteredge, a Lowell resident and National Guard member who died in World War I. I highly encourage you to look into the history of your local parks. You may be surprised to find that it’s more than just a playground!
Kitteredge Park is a spot you shouldn’t miss, not only for their playground but because it is a peaceful, beautiful park that has been treasured for decades.
