This small, fully enclosed playground is a hidden gem! I’m so glad that we stumbled up on it because it just may be our new favorite place to play. And although it’s very close to the businesses on Route 129 (including Panera!), you would never know it when you’re there. We had the park to ourselves one of the times we visited; we made new friends the other time (it was just us and one other mom with her two daughters – who happened to be the exact same ages as my two boys! How perfect!).
Although there are no swings at this park, the variety of equipment was perfect to keep my kids entertained for a long time. They especially loved the fire truck – an homage to a local fireman who passed away in 2015.
“Firefighter Dave’s Playground” is intended for kids age 2-5 and was added to the park two years ago. My boys especially loved pretending to drive the fire engine and ringing the bell on its side. This portion of the playground is in full sun during the morning, but has much more shade during the afternoon hours (the reverse is true for the other portion of the playground).
In addition to the fire engine, there are several spinning toys and a bouncy fire truck (for two) that round out that area of the playground.
There is also a larger play structure for older kids, but my almost 2-year-old was able to manage it mostly on his own. He’s really into slides at the moment so he was in heaven – there are 4 different ones at this playground.
There is also a baseball field and a walking path at the park. My sons loved seeing all of the dogs that were on walks there while we were playing, and I think it would be an excellent spot for bike riding as well.
My daughter loved the Braille Storybook Trail, which was also installed in 2017 as part of the 100th birthday celebration for the Billerica Lion’s Club. The 9 posts along the trail contain both English and Braille and tell the story of “Owl Babies” by Martin Waddell.
Last but not least, there are several “Four Square” courts painted onto the blacktop at the edge of the park, along with a hopscotch board. There are three trashcans just outside the playground – one of them was overflowing when we visited but the other two were almost empty.
This neighborhood park really is a great place to play – I almost didn’t want to share this info about our “secret” playground!
