Trick or Treating Safety Tips:
- An adult parent or guardian should accompany children
- If older children plan to trick-or-treat alone, plan a route, make sure they have one or more cell phones, and set an agreed end time. Call to check in periodically.
- Only go to homes that are well-lit and have a porch light on
- Never go inside a home or car for a treat. Remain on the doorstep when visiting a home.
- Put reflective tape on bags and costumes
- Children and adults should have flashlights and stay in well-lit areas
- Dress warmly
- Always use the sidewalk, if available. If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic and stay off the road as much as possible.
- Cross the street as a group, at crosswalks if available
- Do not run across street
- Be very careful with costume accessories such as swords and knives
- A parent or guardian should check all treats before eating, in case of allergies or tampering. Avoid homemade treats.
- Be very careful around luminaries, candles, and open flames.
