15 Things to Do Before Summer Ends

By Barbara Evangelista, Publisher July 23, 2024

Did you make a summer "bucket list" with all the fun summer activities that you wanted to squeeze in before school starts?  Have you roasted marshmallows and hot dogs over a campfire? Screamed on a roller coaster?  Ridden bikes on a rail trail?

The days are starting to get a bit shorter, the evenings a little cooler.  Before you know it, the school bus will be at the end of the street.  Before you say goodbye to summer, do some of these unique ideas with your kids and create wonderful memories -- and maybe traditions!

  1. Go fishing
  2. Go berry-picking or peach-picking
  3. Go on a bug hunt
  4. Write and illustrate a children's book with your kids about your favorite adventure this summer
  5. Go letterboxing
  6. Learn how to juggle, and teach your older children (generally, kids need at be at least 8 to manage the eye-hand coordination)
  7. Teach your kids how to play hopscotch and play it with them
  8. Start a rule of no electronics/no screens after dinner, and play board games and card games with the kids.  (This rule will come in handy once school starts!)
  9. Have a picnic at a summer concert
  10. Have a water blaster battle
  11. Go on a whale watch out of Gloucester, Salem, or Boston.
  12. Camp overnight in the back yard
  13. Make ice cream at home
  14. Get fresh, local produce at your nearby Farmers Market
  15. Play miniature golf at Kimball Farm or Max's Country Golf.

What other fun and unique traditions have you started this summer?  What was your favorite outing or activity?
