When It Snows, Make a Snow Slushie!

By Barbara Evangelista, Publisher Lowell Macaroni Kid February 18, 2015
My kids love slushies but we don't get them often since all the sugar and artificial food dyes worry me. (What is a Blue Raspberry anyway, and why are they neon blue?)  All the fresh, fluffy snow that we've received in Greater Lowell over the last few weeks made me wonder if there's a way to create a snow slushie right at home.  After a little experimenting, I came up with a recipe that got the thumbs up from my MacKids.

For one 8-10 oz. slushie, you'll need:
1/4 cup 100% juice concentrate (I used Welch's Strawberry Breeze)
1/2 cup cold water
3-4 cups of fresh, clean snow

Directions:

In a large cup, mix the juice concentrate and cold water.

Add the snow 1/2 cup at a time and stir.  The snow will melt and reduce in size immediately.

After 2 cups or so of snow, the slush will start to thicken. Continue adding snow until you've reached the slushiness you prefer. We like it extra thick, to eat with a spoon, which took about 3 cups of snow for a 10 oz serving.

Enjoy!  Now if I could just figure out a way to have all this fresh snow available for slushies in the middle of summer....
