Summer Fun Product Review: Dippin' Dots Ice Cream

By Barbara Evangelista, Publisher May 20, 2015
One of the big hits at the Macaroni Kid Summer Fun Party last Saturday was Dippin' Dots ice cream. As soon as I pulled out the cooler, families were lined up and ready to enjoy.

Dippin' Dots ice cream is specially frozen using a patented process so that the ice cream is in tiny little pellets or dots.  It's super-cold and provides a blast of flavor and refreshment.  I ordered a variety of flavors: a gallon (30 servings) of Cookies & Cream, which is vanilla dots with chunks of chocolate cookies, and a gallon of Rockin' Cherry Ice with Popping Candy, which is a tangy but sweet cherry ice with popping candy mixed right in.  I also had individual packs of Banana Split, Mint Cookie Crunch, Strawberry, and Birthday Cake.  The gallons came with plastic cups (just the right serving size -- a half-cup) and plastic spoons.  I was surprised to read in the delivery information that Dippin' Dots must be served with a plastic spoon.  I'm guessing that the dots are so cold that they might make metal spoons hazardous for tongues (I'm thinking of the poor kid from A Christmas Story)!

The Dippin' Dots ice cream was a top choice for favorite product at the party.  One mom especially liked that it's less messy than regular ice cream.  They're also surprisingly low in calories -- a half-cup serving of the Cherry Ice only has 130 calories.  Plus, guests said the popping candy was fun and yummy!

My Dippin Dots order was delivered by Fedex in a styrofoam cooler with two large packs of dry ice.  Usually the shipping takes 2 days but my Fedex guy said he saw the Dippin Dots and ice cream labels and wanted to get it right over to my house (thanks, Fedex!).  Since the dots were shipped on Wednesday and my party was on Saturday (and possibly pushed out to Monday due to potential rain), I wanted to be absolutely sure the dots stayed frozen, so I put the whole cooler, dry ice and all, in the freezer compartment of my spare refrigerator.  It fit fine into a standard top freezer, and the dots stayed perfectly frozen.  In fact, they're still perfect as of today, almost a week later, even though the cooler was outside for 8 hours on Saturday.  The dry ice has slowly dissipated but there's still enough left to keep it super-cold.

The best thing about the Dippin' Dots though?  They're fun and unique!  We always enjoy them when we go to amusement parks, so it was really special to get them delivered at home for a party. The kids loved them, and it was really great to be able to give them just a little or a lot, or let them try both flavors, or a mix.

Dippin' Dots has a Macaroni Kid special right now. Order 2 gallons and get a 3rd gallon free PLUS free shipping if you use the promo code SUMMERFUN. This special is valid through August 31, 2015.  Give it a try at your next party!

I received free products for party guests to try and for the purposes of this review. No other compensation was received, and all opinions are my own.
