Explore Nature at Mass Audubon's Wildwood Camp

April 15, 2015
A small girl, hands and knees caked in dirt, carefully inspects each ripe tomato as she plucks them from the vine. A group of boys and girls support one another while traversing a ropes course through the trees. A counselor gathers campers around to examine a pair of animal tracks they have just discovered on the side of a trail. These scenes are only a small window into the world of exploration and discovery that nature camps provide.

When they arrive at a nature camp, most campers can use a smartphone or tablet with ease, but not many can tell the difference between a sugar maple and a Norway maple tree, pitch a tent on their own, or navigate through the woods using a compass. Environmental camps like Wildwood connect youth to nature in ways that cannot be replicated elsewhere. With the guidance of knowledgeable staff, campers gain confidence and skills in outdoor exploration.

A growing body of research shows that children who spend time outdoors have more critical thinking and problem-solving skills than their peers, and achieve higher scores on standardized tests in science, mathematics, listening, and writing. At nature camps, away from a dependence on electronic devices, children learn by doing. These are lessons that can last a lifetime.

At Wildwood, we provide campers with a unique opportunity to experience nature, build friendships, and gain self-confidence. We offer one- and two-week traditional overnight camp for ages 9-14, a Leaders-In-Training program for rising 10th and 11th graders, and an exciting variety of Teen Adventure Treks for ages 14-17. We also have Family Camp—an opportunity for the whole family to reconnect and enjoy the camp experience together.
