Show Review: Disney on Ice Presents Worlds of Fantasy!

By Barbara Evangelista, Publisher January 28, 2015
Disney does it again! This past weekend, I had the pleasure of taking the kids to see Disney on Ice Presents Worlds of Fantasy at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester.  The show was a masterpiece of cool special effects, a funny and flawless narration, and great skating and costumes.

The show had two sections; the first was a quick version of the Tinkerbell movie, and the second was a quick version of Toy Story 3. It was an excellent mix -- the Tinkerbell story was full of fairies, glitter, butterflies, and flowers, all wonderfully appealing to the little girls in the audience (and there were MANY).  The Toy Story show had all the characters from the movie, including a whole contingent of army soldiers, and Lots 'o Huggin Bear, and was a hit with all the kids.

For each portion of the show, the narration was pre-recorded using the actual actors from the movie, for most voices. The skating was choreographed to fit right in with the narration, with the main actors/skaters acting out each scene.  The Tinkerbell story was a bit complex and very fast-paced; I'm guessing a lot of it went right over many of the kids' heads.  (I haven't seen the movie, so it went over mine!)  The story included a rather mean fairy who made it appear that Tinkerbell was preventing the arrival of Spring. The Fairy Queen -- in a spectacular floor-length gown -- flew over the rink during a gathering of the fairies, and later arrived with the Springtime butterflies and flowers after the mean fairy's antics were discovered and stopped. Tinkerbell had a wonderful skating duet with the male lead, with amazing lifts.

After a 15-minute intermission, the Toy Story 3 show began, with Andy heading off to college and saying goodbye to his box of toys. After he departs, a full troop of army soldiers arrives to make sure the coast is clear and performs a fantastic synchronized skating routine. The whole Toy Story crew arrives -- Woody, Buzz, Jessie, Rex the dinosaur, Slinky dog, Hamm the piggy bank, Barbie, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head, and Bullseye the horse. Hamm the pig was so funny; he would skate alongside the audience sitting right next to the rink and wave one of his ears at each family. As in the movie, the whole box of toys is sent off to Sunnyside Daycare, where Lots' o Huggin Bear is in control. The toys are all locked up, but Barbie convinces Ken to let her out, and then she sneaks the key and releases them all. After a slightly scary sequence, Lots' o Huggin Bear is taken away and the toys are sent to live with a new family.

One of the highlights of the show was Barbie and Ken's skating duet, and Ken's fashion show for Barbie. The two skaters actually held thelmselves like dolls, with their elbows crooked and hands cupped -- it was fascinating to watch. The fashion show was so funny; Ken would grab an outfit off the rack, skate off to change, and reappear a moment later (there must have been 4 different Kens) in a red-sequin tuxedo, a fringed hippie outfit, a karate uniform, etc.  Everyone loved the whole Toy Story show especially and the skaters received lots of cheers and applause from the audience.

Disney on Ice Presents Worlds of Fantasy was definitely a big hit for my whole family -- my 7 year old was riveted, my 10 year old daughter loved it, and even my Minecraft-loving 12 year old had a great time.  To find out about upcoming shows, visit www.ticketmaster.com
