Have you heard of summer brain drain or summer learning loss? It's real! Studies say that kids lose 2-3 months of math and reading skills over the summer. Teachers have to spend the first few weeks of school just getting their students back up to grade level. Ensuring that your child reads regularly over the summer (or is read to, for little ones) can help them maintain their reading skills.
Lowell Macaroni Kid wants to help make summer reading fun and rewarding! We are running a free online Summer Reading Program from June 27 to August 7 for kids age 1 to 14 who live in the Greater Lowell MA area*. We have gathered a group of local sponsoring companies that are offering fun rewards for kids who meet a weekly reading goal of 60 minutes per week. Just 10 minutes of reading 6 days a week or 20 minutes 3 days a week will meet the goal! If your kids are still learning or are too young to read, that's fine -- you can meet the 60-minute goal by reading to your child.
To sign up for the Summer Reading Program and earn rewards, register your family on THIS FORM. You will receive an email with a link to the weekly log. Make sure to submit each child's log by the end of the week to earn that week's reward! The reading program begins on June 27.

*Please note the following requirements for participation in the Summer Reading Program. By submitting your family registration form, you acknowledge that you understand and will abide by these rules:
- A parent or guardian must submit a family registration form with a valid email address before children can begin logging their reading time. Program updates and reward information will be sent to the family email address and will also be published in our weekly newsletter. Lowell Macaroni Kid is not responsible for misdirected or undelivered emails or incorrectly-entered email addresses.
- You must be a subscriber of the free weekly Lowell Macaroni Kid email newsletter to register for the Summer Reading Program. If you are not already a subscriber, we will add you as a subscriber when you register for the program. We ask that you remain subscribed to Lowell Macaroni Kid during the entirety of the 2016 Summer Reading Program.
- You must be a resident of the Greater Lowell MA area and specifically live within 20 miles of Lowell MA USA. This program is not open to families who do not live within 20 miles of Lowell, Massachusetts, USA.
- Rewards must be redeemed by you at the sponsor business location listed in our program materials and will not be mailed or delivered. There is a deadline for each reward redemption. Rewards cannot be redeemed after the deadline and will be forfeited.
- Each registered child can earn a maximum of one reward per sponsored week, even if multiple reading forms are submitted that week.
- The valid time period for entering a reading form is from midnight on the first day of the reading week to 11:59 PM on the last day of the reading week.
- This offer is not redeemable for cash or cash equivalents at our sponsor business locations and does not apply to past purchases. The sponsoring businesses may substitute rewards other than those listed above based on availability, with no notice to participants.
- This giveaway program is not affiliated with Facebook.
Your email and family information will remain strictly confidential, will only be used to administer the Summer Reading Program, and will NEVER be given or sold to a third party. A list of the names of children who have successfully earned a reward will be provided to each sponsor for the purpose of reward redemption only. No other identifying information, including email, will be provided to the sponsor.
