Celebrate the Season at Chelmsford Winterfest

By Barbara Evangelista, Publisher February 3, 2016
Despite being the shortest month, February can seem to stretch on forever as we hunker down in the depths of winter. Thank goodness for Chelmsford Winterfest! A Winterfest celebration is designed to bring us all out of our homes to gather and reconnect, enjoy hearty foods, have fun with winter sports, and make the best of a season that can feel way too long. This year, with a relatively warm and sunny winter, we have even more to celebrate!

Chelmsford WinterFest includes many family-friendly activities as well as some events just for grownups. We'll include the kid-friendly activities here but do check the full schedule online to learn more about the adult-oriented Cabaret Night, WinterFest Social, and "One Book Chelmsford" Sunday Social.  Pictures of the 2015 WinterFest are courtesy of the WinterFest Committee.

Friday's activities start with winter-themed stories at the MacKay Library by storyteller Bonnie Rankin. Drop in at 4 PM for stories for all ages.  At 7 PM, the celebration continues in North Chelmsford at the Chelmsford Community Center with Scottish Country Dancing. Drop in and kick up your heels! New visitors are free, returning dancers are $3 with a $10 family cap.

Saturday is filled with activities, starting with a Pancake Breakfast at St. John's the Evangelist Church in North Chelmsford from 8-10:30 AM. $5 per person ($20 household maximum) will get you a delicious breakfast of pancakes, eggs, sausages, homefries and more! Plus, there will be kids activities and music.

Pop on over to the Chelmsford Library later in the morning for "Take Your Child to the Library Day" with a free performance by Ed the Music Man plus crafts and activities or head over to the Central Congregational Church for a Stacey Peasley Concert ($5 per person, $20 family cap). While you're downtown, check out the Boy Scouts campout on the common and help them stay warm with hot cocoa, s'mores and football.

Still hungry? You have your choice of the annual Girl Scouts Malt Shop at the Central Baptist Church next to the common, where servers in poodle skirts will provide grilled cheese sandwiches, hot dogs, and ice cream sundaes along with games and fun, or the annual Chowder Fest at the Chelmsford Senior Center on Groton Rd. They will be serving clam, corn and fish chowder, hot dogs, pizza, apple crisp and more, plus there will be games and balloons.

WinterFest activities continue on Sunday with Varney Playground Family Fun in North Chelmsford from 10 AM to 2 PM, with plenty of playtime, games, music and more.  At 1 PM, there will be a Winter Nature Walk (weather dependent) and a free public skate at the Chelmsford Forum (just let them know you're there for WinterFest).

Come on out and visit with neighbors and friends at all these fun WinterFest activities!
