I recently received the Cuisinart VELOCITY Ultra Trio Blender/Food Processor so that I could try it out and put it through its paces.  This top-of-the-line appliance is a workhorse in the kitchen and, with a 1 horsepower motor, quickly and effortlessly powered through all the blending, chopping, and processing tasks I threw at it.

I'm a mom of tweens -- 3 kids age 8 to 12 -- and they are hungry A LOT. Like all the time. When they get home from school, it can be non-stop snacking right until dinner time.  They tend to go for the carbs, like chips or crackers, which really don't hold them for long. My goal is to try to fill them up with satisfying and yummy snacks that will curb their hunger for a few hours and be healthy too.

I had some fun browsing Pinterest for interesting new snacks that:

  • Could be made quickly
  • Would store well, so there would be enough snacks for the week
  • Use the blender or food processor
  • Had a healthy balance of carbs, protein and fat

I found some great recipes, and the Cuisinart VELOCITY Ultra Trio made quick work of all the recipes I tried:

Healthy Cookie Dough Dip from the much-loved blog Chocolate-Covered Katie

This amazing recipe is perfect for a snack or a party. The name may not sound healthy but, believe it or not, the main ingredient in this sweet dip is a can of white beans (I used Great Northern Beans).  Drain and rinse the beans, add a small amount of oats, some brown sugar, a bit of peanut butter, and whiz it up in the food processor.  It takes about 5 minutes with the powerful Cuisinart and makes a hearty protein-packed spread that's perfect with apples.  It was so good that I had to force myself to stop eating it!

Blender Banana Oatmeal Muffins from the Well-Plated blog

Many muffin recipes pretty much resemble cupcakes -- flour, sugar, and lots of oil to make them moist -- so I was really intrigued by this recipe.  It was especially fast and easy because the Cuisinart food processor is so powerful. A bunch of oats (rolled or quick-cook, either is fine), 2 eggs, a couple of bananas, a small amount of honey, Greek yogurt and baking powder all get processed together into a batter -- the food processor blades are so sharp they literally pulverize the oats into oat flour. Add some chocolate chips, pour it into a muffin tin and bake and you have some quick and healthy muffins for the week!

I also used the blender several times this week to make protein shakes (for me) and smoothies (for the kids). The Cuisinart has a really neat "Smoothie" button -- one press and the blender goes through a pre-programmed cycle, changing speeds to easily chop ice and frozen fruit and produce a thick and well-blended shake.  Plus, the included travel cups are so handy. You can put your drink ingredients in the travel cup, screw on the blender blades, turn the whole thing over (eek -- but it really is sealed!), lock it into the blender base, and blend up your drink. Remove the cup from the base and turn it over, unscrew the blade insert, screw on the travel cup top and you're good to go.  I LOVED this feature!

If you're in the market for a new blender or food processor, the Cuisinart VELOCITY Ultra Trio 1-HP Blender/Food Processor with Travel Cups is a great choice!
